Important social issues

Renewable energy and society’s most vulnerable top of mind for bankmecu customers

In a recent survey, bankmecu asked customers to identify which social issues were currently important to them. The results showed that renewable energy and the welfare of vulnerable people in the community ranked highest with 70% of our customers nominating these two issues as important to them.

bankmecu’s Managing Director, Damien Walsh says, that as a customer owned bank its important to us that we understand  the kinds of issues that are important to our customers. By doing so we can then ensure their bank is considering how best it can invest their money in responsible ways that address these matters.

“This kind of customer feedback has in the past contributed to the bank’s decision to encourage customers to build more sustainably designed homes as well as work with the disability and affordable housing sectors”, said Walsh.

Overtime bankmecu seeks to become Australia’s preferred financier of sustainably designed residential housing.

bankmecu is also working with a number of community organisations in the disability sector seeking to understand how it can best assist people and families living with a disability with their banking and wealth creation.

“Currently there is no other single financial institution which specialises in assisting people impacted by disability with their banking and long term financial needs. Therefore, bankmecu is considering how this situation may be turned around and its own role in bringing about better financial outcomes for these people”, said Walsh.

bankmecu thanks all customers for their input into our survey and looks forward to continuing work to address a range of economic, social and environmental issues that are important to its customers. Now that’s responsible banking.
