National Reconciliation Week

bankmecu wishes to acknowledge National Reconciliation Week, which is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

The theme for this year is Let’s Talk Recognition—with a focus on how Australians can better recognise each other, and recognise the contributions, cultures and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

bankmecu wishes to pursue reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and other Australians through a partnership approach and a true spirit of cooperation.

As part of our commitment to reconciliation, bankmecu in collaboration with Reconciliation Australia has developed a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), to provide tangible actions for advancing the national effort to close the life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and other Australians.

As Australia’s first customer owned bank, our vision for reconciliation is for bankmecu to contribute to increasing awareness about reconciliation, while building our own capacity and that of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and communities, and ultimately contribute to the economic, environmental and social wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
