bankmecu is very pleased to announce the acquisition of another property in Victoria’s west, as part of the bank’s ongoing commitment to conservation and protecting biodiversity.
The Conservation Landbank project enables bankmecu to offset the loss of biodiversity resulting from new homes financed. It is also used to offset carbon emissions generated from the bank’s operations and the cars it finances. The bank became carbon neutral in 2011.
“We offer our customers who finance the build of a new home the opportunity to offset an equivalent area of land in our Conservation Landbank. This biodiversity offset is provided at no cost to our customers,” said bankmecu’s Managing Director Damien Walsh.
bankmecu’s latest acquisition will complement the two other Conservation Landbank properties already established in Minimay and Ozenkadnook.
The proximity of this new property to the existing one at Minimay will allow bankmecu to build on conservation work already underway in the area.
Over time, as the site is vegetated, biodiversity values will be increased as flora and fauna species are given the opportunity to develop.
The current Minimay property has become an important project for the local community, with local volunteers and school groups supporting the project.
“We would like to thank everyone who has supported bankmecu’s Conservation Landbank project and we hope that the new acquisition will further strengthen what has already been established and nurtured” said Mr Walsh
“The Conservation Landbank project is a great example of what can be achieved when financial organisations, NGOs and the community work together and invest back into the environment,” Mr Walsh said.
The new property will be located at Coopers Road in Minimay, Victoria. It is approximately 103 ha in size, and will sequest approximately 18,647 tonnes of carbon over the next 100 years.
