bankmecu offsets 40,000 tonnes of CO2
bankmecu is pleased to announce that since we launched our goGreen Car Loan back in November 2003, we have committed to offset over 40,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from the cars we’ve financed.
This is equivalent to taking around 10,000 cars off the road for a year.
This offset has occurred through the sequestration of carbon in the bankmecu Conservation Landbank.
bankmecu’s Risk Management Coordinator Sustainability, Nikki Jordan says, “as part of our responsible approach to banking, bankmecu has been offsetting greenhouse gas emissions generated from car loans we have financed and to have reached this milestone of offsetting 40,000 tonnes of CO2 is an achievement all our customers can be very proud of”.
bankmecu pioneered a different approach to motor vehicle finance when the goGreen® Car Loan was created. At the time it was launched the goGreen Car Loan won the prestigious Gold Banksia Environmental Award. The Conservation Landbank project has also been recognised with many awards including the Premier's Sustainability Award - Products and Services in 2009.
“Sequesting carbon by planting and protecting trees which will absorb sufficient carbon to offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the average car per year also enhances local bio-diversity”, said Jordan.
