bankmecu acknowledges NAIDOC week
bankmecu acknowledges NAIDOC week, which this year takes place during 1-8 July. NAIDOC stands for the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognize the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields.
The theme for NAIDOC week 2012 is Spirit of the Tent Embassy: 40 years on. This year’s theme celebrates the champions who lived to renew the spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through the establishment of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in 1972.
As part of our commitment to reconciliation, bankmecu in collaboration with Reconciliation Australia has developed a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), to provide tangible actions for advancing the national effort to close the life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and other Australians.
Part of our RAP is a commitment to provide educational material and information about events aiming to raise awareness amongst staff and customers.
bankmecu is getting involved in NAIDOC week by supporting the 'Our Place' community concert and lunch through Bendigo's NAIDOC Week Committee. The NAIDOC Committee has invited bankmecu to support a NAIDOC light lunch to foster reconciliation within the broader Bendigo community at “Our Place” Eaglehawk to be held on July 4th 2012. The purpose of this event is to raise attention of and celebrate reconciliation.
