I Am A Girl - a documentary that must be made
ten girls, ten stories, ten voices for change
There is a group of people in the world today who are persecuted more than anyone else; they are not political or religious activists. They are girls.
We live in a world where 62 million girls of primary school age are out of school, where 100 million girls are missing due to female foeticide and 70 per cent of the 1.5 billion people living on $1 or less a day are female.
These facts and more have driven the award-winning filmmaker, Rebecca Barry, to make a documentary that tells the stories of 10 girls from 10 different countries. Through this documentary, a picture will be painted of what it means to be a girl today and allowing the girls to tell their stories of strength, hope, courage and the will to survive despite hardship.
The I Am Girl journey will take a cross section of cultures and societies from Africa, India, Asia, South America and Australia. Through these girls' experiences there will be an opportunity to hear first about their lives and their future dreams. Behind Rebecca's passion for this project is the knowledge that documentaries have the power to influence positive change, they inform and start conversations and raise awareness within a wide audience.
