    Supporting SchoolAid's Indigenous Literacy campaign

Did you know that only one in five kids in remote Indigenous communities can read to the acceptable minimum standard?

SchoolAid's Indigenous Literacy Campaign in support of the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) asks Aussie kids to lend a hand to close this gap.

With the help of a $25,000 investment from bankmecu, SchoolAid helps primary school students to make a tangible difference to the lives of other children. Kids share a book with their class and make a gold coin donation, then the class gets together and chooses a book to donate to kids in an Indigenous community.

SchoolAid is working with the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation to reach children in regional and remote communities such as Palm Island, Groote Eylandt, Tennant Creek, Port Lincoln, Wagga Wagga and many more.

The program recognises that improved literacy levels are linked to increased academic and occupational success, improved self esteem, participation in and commitment to education and higher levels of socially accepted behaviour. The benefits to improved literacy have a positive impact on not only the students, but also on their families and the wider community.

bankmecu's involvement in this program is only made possible because of the number of schools and individuals involved in education who choose to bank with bankmecu.
