bankmecu is one of Australia's largest and most successful cooperatives offering a responsible approach to banking. As a financial cooperative, bankmecu is owned and controlled by its customers.

As at 30 June 2011, bankmecu had 133,865 customers, $2.625b in assets, 342 staff and 26 service centres located across Australia.

To assist bankmecu’s commitment to sustainability, the Company has made various external commitments to embed economic, social and environmental accountability across all aspects of its operation.

Throughout 2010/11 bankmecu continued to improve performance against commitments made as a signatory to the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) through a Sustainability Covenant with EPA Victoria; the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC); the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI);  and bankmecu’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) developed in collaboration with Reconciliation Australia.

In 2010/11, bankmecu was once again awarded for excellence in product development, sustainability reporting and whole of business approach to sustainability.
